Residents have come forward to highlight dilapidated buildings in their own neighbourhoods after the Geelong Advertiser revealed some of the city’s worst offenders.

With developments taking shape around Geelong, locals have been left frustrated by a small minority of buildings and homes on residential and main streets letting the team down.

Greater Geelong acting chief executive Gareth Smith told the Geelong Advertiser last week that the council worked with residents to ensure properties remained compliant.

“Where compliance isn’t achieved, infringement notices can be issued,” he said.

“There is a maximum penalty of $2000 for each offence.”

Neighbours have been complaining about the abandoned house – now only home to squatters and rodents – for over 16 years.

One nearby homeowner, who did not want to be named, said problems with the property dated back more than a decade.

“There have been mattresses set on fire by squatters, snakes and overgrown grass and ivy for years,” she said.

“I don’t believe anyone in the neighbouring homes should have to put up with that eyesore.”

One neighbour told the Geelong Advertiser the council was regularly contacted about overgrown grass out the front of the home.

“People in the street are aware of it, and the house has a history,” she said.

A disused storefront in a busy Geelong thoroughfare has recently been plagued by vandals.

The old cafe has been boarded up for at least two years, according to Google Maps images from 2018 and is now a hotspot for tagging and graffiti.

Another vacant property attracting attention is an abandoned commercial space in East Geelong opposite the cemetery.

Residents say the site was once reportedly home to the Australian Postal Institute, but had been left vacant for at least 20 years.

Former architect Peter MacKinlay said the site was in a good location and it had been a shame to watch it fall into such a state of disrepair over the years.

“It could just be so much better developed,” he said.

“It’s an eyesore and I don’t feel like it’s being looked after properly.

“It could be good residential land, or purchased by the council and turned into a nice park.”

A heavily graffitied former milk bar near the Roberts Road intersection in Belmont has attracted attention from neighbours throughout the years.

It’s believed the storefront, which sits across the road from Roslyn Primary School, has been vacant for a number of years.
