Future Gold Coast: How Gold Coast’s growing film industry is marketing city to the world

The Gold Coast’s film and video production industry is on the path to recovery - and if you listen to city creatives it’s going to bring the Glitter Strip with it.

THE Gold Coast’s film industry is on the path to recovery – and it’s bringing the rest of the city with it, according to city leaders and local creatives.

The city film industry has been singled out by Mayor Tom Tate and business leaders as one to showcase in an effort to boost the Gold Coast’s national and international reputation.

Kara and Josh Hamilton own video production and photography company The Edit Suite, based out of Varsity Lakes.

Ms Hamilton said she believed the film and creative industry gave the Coast a “huge advantage” in marketing itself to the world.

“Probably around 70 per cent of our clients want some sort of stunning shot of the Gold Coast in their video so they’re unintentionally creating tourism videos all the time,” she said.

“It’s hard to take a bad shot of the Gold Coast from any angle so their own clients then watch these videos and may not only want to engage with that business but then come to the Gold Coast themselves.”

She said the impact of the pandemic was still yet to be fully seen citywide, with their own business taking a major hit near the start of the year.

“Literally every event cancelled overnight and most of our clients either cancelled or postponed their shoots,” she said. “We have since gotten busy again but we do not really have many face-to-face meetings which seems to be the norm everywhere now.

“(The film industry) was growing before COVID, we’re really not too sure if it is now. It will get there again though. As the Gold Coast continues to grow and develop so will our industry. The creative industry here is really on par with the bigger cities around Australia and it is only going to get better each year.”
