Former champion jockey Danny Nikolic has been accused of breaking the wing mirror of a private eye’s car after being served with court papers.
Footage of the incident, which occurred on Wednesday in Melbourne’s western suburbs, shows a visibly angry Nikolic getting out of his luxury Porsche Cayenne and abusing the private detective.
It does not capture the mirror being broken, but does depict large cracks in it as Nikolic gesticulates at the private detective.
The drama unfolded at about 10.30am after the private detective, who had been tailing Nikolic since 7am, served the jockey with court paperwork through the open window of his Porsche while he was sitting outside shops on Ballarat Rd in Deer Park with his girlfriend, Tania Hyett.
Nikolic’s legal opponents resorted to hiring the private detective to tail the jockey because Wednesday was the deadline to serve the paperwork on him.
The court papers are understood to relate to a stoush that also involves his former lawyer and business associate, Pat Lennon, who is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Victoria’s legal regulator.
After being served, Nikolic followed the detective’s car in his Porsche.
A few minutes later, while both vehicles were stopped at traffic lights, he got out of the Porsche and strode to the driver’s side door of the private detective’s car.
Video footage records several thumps before Nikolic says: “Open the door, s**tkicker.”
The private investigator, who works for Rivica Investigations but did not want to be named, said that Nikolic “punched my wing mirror and caused it to smash”.
Nikolic can be seen on video getting back into the Porsche and driving away.
The private eye said he called triple-0 to report the incident and also drove to Sunshine police station to make a statement.
It is understood Victoria Police are investigating the incident.
Police and Nikolic have been contacted for comment.
Nikolic’s wins at the track in a career that stretched from the 1990s into the 2000s included the Caulfield Cup and the Turnbull Stakes.
Mr Lennon represented Nikolic in a series of court cases in the mid to late 2010s in which the jockey failed to overturn a ban from riding imposed for threatening racing stewards.
The pair are also linked through their involvement in Argyle Lending, a high-interest lending business run by Mr Lennon’s wife, Jane Lennon.
The Lennons were both lawyers until July this year, when they handed in their practising certificates amid an investigation into their behaviour by the Legal Services Commissioner.
