South Australia’s most senior Liberal, Senator Simon Birmingham, is expected to spend just one day a week campaigning in the state as the Coalition sandbags east coast seats.

The seats that will decide the election

South Australia’s most senior Liberal, Senator Simon Birmingham, is expected to spend just one day a week campaigning in the state as the Coalition sandbags east coast seats.

The Coalition’s campaign spokesman, Senator Birmingham, pictured, is dividing his time between Canberra, Adelaide and portfolio announcements over the next four weeks.

“South Australians can expect me to be in SA seats as well as in the national media, using every minute to argue for our policies that are creating jobs in SA and against the threat posed by Bill Shorten’s $387 billion in higher taxes on retirees, workers and homeowners,” Mr Birmingham said.

Little more than a week into the official campaign, The Advertiser understands the Liberal Party is buoyed by its prospects in the seats of Boothby and Sturt. This comes despite a campaign against Liberal incumbent Nicolle Flint from lobby group GetUp! about her support for Peter Dutton during the leadership spill.

Labor’s most senior figure Senator Penny Wong plans to spend more than half of the campaign in Adelaide.

Her focus is on the marginal seat of Boothby, at 2.8 per cent, where she will campaign with Labor candidate Nadia Clancy.

Senator Wong intends to attend at least one event in Boothby everyday she is in Adelaide. She will also help campaign in the seats of Adelaide, Mayo, and Sturt, and will make one visit to Grey.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who is yet to visit South Australia, has credited Premier Steven Marshall for “turning the state around”.

“I think we (federal and state governments) are so synched that it’s really going to help the growth of the South Australian economy and jobs,” he said.
