Federal Election 2022: Guide to voting, polling booths

A record number of eligible Australians have enrolled to vote on May 21. Here are the full details of where and when you can do it.

A record number of voters are expected to vote in this election, with the AEC confirming 96.8 per cent of eligible Australians have enrolled – up from 96 per cent in 2019.

Voting on May 21 will take place in public schools, community halls and similar spaces across the country, kicking off at 8am and closing at 6pm sharp (all times local).

Voters can request a postal ballot from the AEC website (www.aec.gov.au) or from AEC offices up until Wednesday May 18.

In 2019 nearly one in three votes was cast before election day, but in 2022 the early voting period has been cut to two weeks.

If you are interstate on election day, and haven’t done a postal vote or voted early in your home electorate, you can only vote at a designated interstate voting centre. The AEC will publish the locations of these centres closer to election day.

Voting is compulsory for all Australians aged 18 and over who are enrolled, with a $20 administrative penalty payable for those who fail to vote. However if you have a valid reason why you failed to vote you can write to the AEC and request they waive the fee.
