A campaigner for Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party took the spirit of democracy sausage a little too literally in western Sydney this morning.
Police were called to a polling booth in Bankstown just after 10am, when a confrontation between the 62-year-old man and a group of people turned seriously weird.
The man allegedly exposed himself to three women and one man after the tiff, leading him to be cautioned, fined and forced to leave the area.
In Cairns, UAP volunteers were caught unawares when they were asked to name Mr Palmer’s policies — any of them.
The trio were stumped and after moments of silence each looked at the flyers they were carrying to find a clue.
“Tax cuts?” one of the volunteers read.
The volunteers insisted they were not genuine volunteers and were not being paid by Mr Palmer, despite reports the UAP leader has hired dozens of young models to hand out how-to-vote cards in Far North Queensland.
The United Australia Party has spent an estimated $60 million on its election campaign advertising — the highest figure in Australia’s history. Mr Palmer has previously said he’d budgeted to spend $80 million on his campaign if he had to.
Until mid-April, Mr Palmer was running as a candidate in the north Queensland seat of Herbert, which experts said he had “nil” chance of winning. But he abandoned it to try his luck in the Senate.
Earlier in the campaign, the mining magnate promised the country his party “will win government” taking out full-page ads to show off his candidates.
The UAP is running candidates in all 151 seats.
