Election updates: Long lines as more than half a million Aussies vote early – and that’s a worrying sign for Peter Dutton

A record number of Australians have cast their ballots on day one of early voting – while Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton have visited cathedrals to honour the Pope. LIVE UPDATES

Navigating Australia's 2025 elections

More than half a million Australians have already cast their ballots amid long queues on the first day of early voting – a trend that will concern the Coalition given all major polls show Peter Dutton trailing Anthony Albanese with 11 days to go until the election.

As of 4.40pm AEST on Tuesday, more than 510,000 votes had been cast – a greater number than the entire population of Canberra, and a significant increase on the pre-polling numbers in 2022

Both Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton visited Catholic cathedrals to mourn the death of Pope Francis, leading to a quieter day on the campaign trail – but they will resume hostilities tonight in the third leaders’ debate.
