Whoever wins election must find where to ‘rein in’ spending

Polling day is finally here for the Federal Election. This is everything you need to know if you have left your vote to the last minute.

WHERE TO VOTE

They are usually located in schools, church halls or public buildings.

HOW TO VOTE

Volunteers from political parties will stand outside polling places distributing how-to-vote cards.

These cards may be taken into the polling place to assist you in marking your ballot papers.

After giving your full name, you will then be asked to confirm you have not yet voted and your address.

You will then be given two sheets of paper.

The green sheet is for the House of Representatives and you must order all the candidates by placing a number in each box.

So, your first choice is marked with a number “1” in the box next to that candidate, then “2” and “3”, and so on.

The order of the candidates as they appear on the ballot paper is determined by a random draw.

The white sheet is for the Senate and you have two options for casting your vote.

You can number at least six boxes above the line, or number at least 12 boxes below the line.

Again, the order on the ballot paper is determined by a random draw.

HOW TO VOTE IF YOU HAVE COVID

There was a last-minute change to Australia’s electoral laws on Friday, so that more than 100,000 people who are currently isolating with Covid-19 will still be able to vote.

Anyone tested positive after 6pm on Tuesday will be allowed to vote over the phone. They were previously not permitted to do so.

Some people have also done postal votes.
