Mr Howard’s comments come as Jim Chalmers says retaliation against Donald Trump’s tariffs may not be Australian’s best move while he accused Peter Dutton of taking his cues from the US.
Earlier, Beijing state media again praised Anthony Albanese and accused Peter Dutton of “beating the drums of war”, describing Australia’s reaction to a suspected Chinese spy ship off the coast as “paranoia”.
Mr Dutton talked tough about standing up to America, saying: “If I need to have a fight with Donald Trump or any other world leader … I will do it in a heartbeat.”
