Extinction Rebellion protesters fined, placed on good behaviour bonds after week of disruption

A midwife, a nurse, an engineer and a senior citizen were among the climate protesters who faced a Brisbane court for shutting down the city.

A MIDWIFE, a nurse, a qualified engineer and a 73-year-old were among several people arrested during Extinction Rebellion protests who pleaded guilty to charges yesterday.

Extinction Rebellion spokeswoman Emma Dorge — who posted a live video from inside the Brisbane watchhouse after her arrest earlier this month — was fined $1300 for three offences.

Dorge, 23, a midwife who filmed protests at Albion in August, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Magistrates Court to obstructing traffic.

She also pleaded guilty to another obstruction offence, on October 7, when she was part of an XR protest group that blocked peak hour traffic at the intersection of George and Charlotte Sts, Brisbane.

Dorge used super glue to glue a protester’s hands to the road, Brisbane Magistrates Court heard.

She also pleaded guilty to breaching an August bail undertaking, by taking part in the October 7 city protest. The magistrate did not record a conviction.

Magistrate Janelle Brassington said Dorge’s actions were not just about inconveniencing people.

She said there also was the risk that something very serious could happen to people and others could not reach them to give aid, because of the protesters’ obstruction.

Daniel Young, 27, a qualified nurse who also works as a disability carer, pleaded guilty to contravening a police direction and obstructing police on October 8.

Young was one of several climate protesters who locked onto a barrel “sleeping dragon’’ device at the corner of Ann and George Sts, Brisbane, on October 8.

Fire and Rescue personnel had to remove protesters from the barrel, the court heard.

A lawyer for Young, who has had two previous court appearances for similar offences, said he was sorry for disrupting traffic and commuters, but felt he had to put himself on the line.

Young was fined $1000, with no conviction recorded.

Sean Di Lizio, 28, a qualified engineer working in property management, pleaded guilty to obstructing traffic in William St, Brisbane, on October 8, in a climate protest.

The married father-of-two, who is studying for a PhD, was put on a $500 good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.

Frank Moeller, 73, drove a Toyota Hilux into the intersection of Turbot and George Sts in Brisbane on the morning of October 8, as part of a protest involving concrete-filled drums.

He pleaded guilty to stopping in an intersection and was fined $500 with no conviction recorded.

Alexander Buralli, a former environmental engineering student, was locked onto a “sleeping dragon’’ device under a boat trailer in George St, Brisbane, during morning peak hour on October 8.

He was placed on a $600 good behaviour bond, with no conviction recorded.
