EAST Point, Mindil Beach Casino and the George Brown Botanic Gardens will soon have orange eScooters buzzing about with council’s scooter program set to expand.

Darwin Council manager innovation growth and development Josh Sattler said by the half way mark of the trial next month scooterists would be able to enjoy the sunset from Mindil Beach on the orange scooters.

“Neuron are presenting on the expansion of phase one to the working group next month, to include the botanic gardens, Mindil beach and Casino,” he said.

“Future expansion to East Point will be assessed in the following phase.”

Mr Sattler said the expansion would be accompanied by a larger eScooter fleet.

“Neuron is currently running a fleet of 250 eScooters and are looking to increase the fleet to 350 in readiness for the proposed expansion,” he said.

Just three eScooters have been damaged so far, which has given council and Neuron Mobility confidence to expand the eScooters’ range.

“(It’s) a positive record when compared nationally,” Mr Sattler said.

“Overall the users of Neuron eScooter have been very well behaved, which is very good news as the continuation of the trial is dependent on the users doing the right thing.”

Neuron Mobility chief executive Zachary Wang said the expansion of the eScooters range would help Darwin rebound from the coronavirus-hit economy.

“With the COVID-19 restrictions now easing, we are all looking for ways to support Darwin’s local businesses, particularly the hard-hit restaurants, cafes and hotels,” he said.

“Our e-scooters are the perfect way for people to get back into the city and the Waterfront, Esplanade and Cullen Bay areas to help boost the local economy.

“We’re proud to be partnering with the City of Darwin to provide a safe, convenient and fun eScooter program.”

Minor expansions have already seen parts of Mitchell St, the Waterfront and Carey St added to the eScooters range due to resident demand.
