A GREYHOUND trainer doped his long-shot dog with meth before it convincingly won two races in southeast Queensland, police and racing officials allege.
In the latest scandal to hit the industry, investigators allege trainer Anthony Hess, 44, was giving his dogs a cocktail of drugs.
Detectives allege his greyhound Bonknocka Lass was doped with amphetamines, methamphetamines and pseudoephedrine in three races.
It was an outside chance – the highest priced at $44.70 – on August 2 when it won a 520m race at Albion Park by two lengths. It also topped the podium a week later at a starting price of $8.60.
The greyhound also tested positive to the cocktail of drugs on July 5, when it placed eighth.
Investigators allege another dog trained by Hess, called Button Pusher, was also given the cocktail on August 2. That dog placed sixth.
The Queensland Racing Crime Squad will allege the Camira man doped his greyhounds to “gain a race day advantage and win prize or wagering money”.
Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said: “These alleged offences are shocking, amounting to the deliberate manipulation of greyhound racing outcomes and while it is illegal, it is also dangerous to the animals involved. Activities such as these bring the integrity of the racing industry into disrepute and must be stamped out.”
QRIC on Wednesday suspended Hess’s greyhound training licence.
Hess was remanded in custody when he appeared in Richlands Magistrates Court this week. He has been charged with five counts of attempted fraud in August and July and 62 counts of supplying dangerous drugs between July 2017 and August this year. He is scheduled to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court on November 26.
