In the wake of the death of convicted paedophile and disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris, a disturbing video clip has resurfaced from a child safety campaign in the 1980s.

The video, titled “Kids Can Say No!” shows Harris, advising children on identifying and speaking up about child sex abuse. Given Harris’ crimes, the footage takes on a chilling new meaning.

The 1985 video, released during the time when Harris was committing some of the offences he would later go to prison for, features him explaining inappropriate touching while demonstrating the actions himself.

He can be seen touching the children and attempting to portray “pats that make you feel good”.

However, Harris swiftly transitions to discussing the type of touching that makes children feel uncomfortable.

“It’s that sort of touching I want to talk about today because I want you to understand the sort of touching that doesn’t make you feel too good,” Harris explains to the young audience in the video.

He engages in a conversation with a young girl, asking her, “Who owns your body?” to which she responds, “[It’s] my body.”

Harris affirms her answer, emphasising that sometimes people do things that don’t make others feel good.

The video continues with Harris mentioning “no” feelings and the importance of stopping unwanted touches. He encourages children to speak out about potential attackers and emphasises the need for help.

“Some people don’t act right with kids, and they need help,” Harris states in the video.

But years later, the entertainer’s true nature was revealed when he was convicted of 12 offences of indecent assault in 2014.

His crimes included assaults on young victims, such as an eight-year-old autograph hunter, two girls in their early teens, and his daughter’s friend who he abused for 16 years starting when she was just 13.

Justice Nigel Sweeney, in delivering Harris’ jail sentence, expressed his damning verdict, highlighting the lack of remorse displayed by the disgraced entertainer.

Justice Sweeney’s words resonated with the severity of the crimes committed by Harris.

“You have done many good and charitable works and numerous people have attested to your positive good character,” he said.

“But the verdicts of the jury show that in the period from 1969 to 1986 you were also a sex offender.”

The judge continued to outline the aggravating features of the case, pointing out that Harris exploited the trust placed in him due to his celebrity status. The crimes were committed against victims who were young and vulnerable, with a significant age gap between Harris and each victim.

The judge also noted that Harris derived a thrill from committing the offences in the presence of others, further distressing the victims.

He said the resulting impact was “severe psychological harm”.

Justice Sweeney commended the courage of the victims for eventually coming forward and providing evidence against Harris.

However, the judge made it clear that Harris had shown no remorse for his actions, and as a result, his “reputation now lay in ruins”, and he had been stripped of his honours.

He was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison, and served three years before his release in May 2017.

Harris then spent his final years living as a recluse in his luxury Berkshire, UK home before dying of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma and old age on May 10.

In a statement, Harris’ family said the former TV star had “recently died, peacefully, surrounded by family and friends and has been laid to rest”.
