Darwin personal trainer shares his tips for shedding the Christmas kilos

TERRITORIANS are being encouraged to put down the leftovers and kick the holiday kilos after Aussies used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse for even more indulgent Christmas celebrations than usual this year

Could exercise be the next miracle cancer treatment?

TERRITORIANS are being encouraged to put down the pudding and head back to the gym to kick the holiday kilos, after a recent PayPal Australia report found Aussies used the COVID-19 pandemic as a reason for even more indulgent Christmas celebrations than usual this year.

Personal trainer Matt Cowling, who owns Darwin gym Evolve Fitness, said his best advice for those wanting to get back in shape after Christmas was to start with good nutrition.

“The most important thing is to start realising that Christmas is over, food is always going to be there and you need to start reining it back,” he said.

“The saying that you can’t out-train a bad diet is 100 per cent true.

“People’s focus should be on hydration and eating healthy foods, and then their energy will come up and they can start to add in training.

“If you don’t have your nutrition in check, then that is the number one place to start, especially after Christmas.”

Mr Cowling said starting with a positive mindset was also important, as without it aspiring gym junkies were prone to give up too quickly and “get stuck in an unhealthy loop until February”.

“If you’re getting discouraged, check what you’re focusing on,” he said.

“Is it ‘I have to get in shape’ … or do you throw that mindset down the road and go ‘in three months’ time I’ll feel lighter, more energetic, more motivated to spend time with my children and an inspiration for my friends’.”

“Consider where you’re focusing mentally, because your body follows your mind.”
