Darwin Alderman Emma Young has resigned from her position as an elected member of the Chan Ward after being appointed in a council operations role.
Ms Young has been appointed as council’s executive manager for environment, climate and waste services after working for the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority developing policy for the implementation of new NT environmental legislation.

In her new role, Ms Young will continue the project at the Shoal Bay Waste Facility, converting landfill biogas to energy.
Ms Young said Tuesday night’s meeting would be her last, with her resignation effective from February 20.
“I would like to thank the community for first giving me the opportunity of becoming an elected member over five years ago,” she said.
“One of the areas I’ve been quite vocal on is the need for good governance and the need (of it) with an election in August, all (members) need to lead by example.”
Darwin chief executive Scott Waters said her services to the Darwin community and for council would not being lost in the new role.
“Dr Young has a real passion and grounded experience about increasing environmental efficiencies for waste management and recycling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

The position was advertised nationally and including an extensive recruitment process with a strong field of applicants.
With a full Council general election due to be held in August, a by-election will not be held in the 6 month interim period for the vacant alderman position and the Chan Ward will continue to be represented by Aldermen Peter Pangquee and Robin Knox.
