LOCAL cyclists are being urged to help design a new bike park on the Bellarine Peninsula, as one local council looks to provide a space for riders away from makeshift jumps.

The announcement comes after the Borough of Queenscliffe closed a number of informal bike tracks in Point Lonsdale last year in a bid to protect sensitive coastal vegetation.

“We’ve really appreciated local riders staying away from these areas to help them regrow, but we know that this means there are even fewer places to ride than before,” council said.

“Adventurous bike riders in the Borough need a proper bike park where they can challenge themselves and practice their skills.

“Building a proper bike park will give riders a fantastic new facility so they don’t need to ride in areas with sensitive vegetation – the solution is a win for everyone.”

Council is now calling on the community – including kids and teenagers – to help design the bike park through an online survey or by submitting their own plans and drawings.

A “range of options” would be considered for the bike park including a jumps track and a pump track, council said.

“We try to be responsive to ideas we get from local residents, and we think this is a great idea that will give riders a place to practice their skills and spend time together,” it said.

“We know you’re creative and passionate, so we want your ideas to make sure we get the design right for this new park.”

Several participants in last year’s budget survey said a bike park was one of the local projects they most wanted council invest in, council said.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning has identified a large area of vacant land on the site of the old Queenscliff High School as a potential site for the park.

The survey will close February 14, for more information visit www.queenscliffe.vic.gov.au/bikepark.
