Police pursuit in Geelong

A NORLANE man who drove at police at “appallingly high speeds” in a stolen car while high on ice in a bid to flee police during a five-day crime rampage has been jailed for six years and one month.

Jordan Blake Kenyon drove at up to 170km/h in the stolen Mercedes-Benz with headlights off and through intersections, dangerously close to pedestrians and down the wrong way of the Surf Coast Highway last April.

The crime spree occured while Kenyon was on bail between April 11 and 15 last year, the County Court heard.

The 24-year-old also ran more than eight red lights as he sped from police in the early hours of April 15, and at 140km/h in a 60km/h zone in Newcomb.

In sentencing Kenyon yesterday, County Court Judge Gerard Mullaly lambasted his actions.

“What you need to understand as a fundamental fact is that this sort of behaviour will simply not be tolerated by the community,” Judge Mullaly said.

“No longer should young men full of drugs and misguided bravado thinking that getting into stolen cars and driving in a manner such as you did — as if it was just a video game — and drive at police who are trying to stop them, they should no longer consider that they will receive anything other than years imprisonment.”

Judge Mullaly said Kenyon — who will be eligible for parole in about three years and nine months — showed a “complete disregard for the safety of other motorists” as he fled from police.

Kenyon’s getaway was tracked by the police air wing and footage showed a pedestrian running to avoid the car he was driving in Marshalltown Rd, Grovedale.

After viewing the air wing footage Judge Mullaly said: “What I saw bordered on incomprehensible irresponsibility and thoughtlessness.”

During Kenyon’s plea hearing the court was told he drove at two police divisional vans, sped through the Geelong hospital emergency drop-off area, and broke into two Rippleside homes stealing $3000 worth of jewellery.

Kenyon’s crime spree came to end when police pounced on him hiding in a garden shed in Coxon Pde, Norlane about 1.15am on April 15 after he dumped the Mercedes and about 2g of ice.

Kenyon, who will be disqualified from driving for six years, was jailed for handling stolen number plates (three months); car theft (12 months); stealing jewellery (six months); driving at an emergency workers using a stolen car (four years, three months); and petrol theft (two months).

He was also jailed for dangerous driving (12 months); reckless conduct endangering serious injury (three years); possessing ice (four months); driving while disqualified (12 months) and breaching bail (three months). Some of the sentences will be served concurrently.
