Coles’ new Flybuys deal and ways to save at checkout

Coles has issued a new triple threat in the cost of living supermarket war to help families get ahead. See how you can save on your next shop.

Replay: The Weekly Times Round Table - The Story Around Food Prices

Exclusive: Coles has issued a new triple threat in the cost of living supermarket war by offering cheaper items as low as $1, cut-price meat deals and more Flybuy points.

From Wednesday, shoppers will see dollar aisle ends arrive in stores with the price of hundreds of everyday items kept to $1 or less, including pasta, soup, tuna and canned Italian tomatoes.

Customers will also be able to increase their Flybuys and earn triple points by purchasing Coles’ private label products until June 28.

Flybuys members can then save and redeem their points at the checkout or use them on travel, entertainment, technology or gift cards.

They can also save them up and spend them on Christmas food and presents.

Meat has also recently become more affordable under Coles’ Mix ‘n Save offer where shoppers can buy any two packs of 15 popular cuts for just $12.

The offer includes Coles Original Beef Sausages, RSPCA Chicken Burgers Plain Crumb and Pork & Beef 3 Star Mince.

Coles Commercial and Express Chief Executive Leah Weckert said it is committed to providing customers with the best possible value.

“Pasta is the most popular dinner in Australia and chicken is the most popular protein,” she said.

“By keeping our Coles pasta range at a dollar and cutting the cost of Coles RSPCA chicken drumsticks and other winter staples like soups, Coles bacon and high fibre bread, we are helping Australians save money on their regular purchases to deliver even better value at a time they need it most,” she said.

The move comes after rival Woolworths confirmed supplies and cost of key fruit and vegetables would be affected by bad weather in growing regions.

To help shoppers, Woolworths also cut the price of more than 300 of everyday items and Coles placed 530 new products on their everyday low prices list in March.

Australia’s annual food price inflation has also climbed to 4.3 per cent in the March quarter compared to a year ago.

Johannes Faul, Equity Analyst and Director at Morningstar, said in a recent report that shelf prices will rise by “mid single digits” in the second half of fiscal 2022.

“We anticipate competition between the Australia’s supermarket chains including Aldi to remain intense, and the quickly expanding and expensive online channels of the majors to add more costs,” he wrote.

Frugl app Managing Director and CEO Sean Smith said there are a number of ways to lessen the impact of rising prices and become a savvy shopper to find the best prices and deals, regardless of promotional activity.

“Coles and Woolworths update their catalogues every Wednesday morning so this is

the best time to purchase items on special to avoid missing out due to some supermarkets experiencing stock shortages,” he said.

“Using a grocery comparison app like Frugl can also show you real time price differences between your local supermarkets. Frugl looks at Coles and Woolworths but also IGA, Drakes, Aldi and Foodland so you can shop confidently knowing you’re getting the best price.

“Shop by what’s in season and look for yellow ticket items in store. Supermarkets use a

number of visual points to show you what’s on special so you can save even further.”
