A GOLD Coast couple have been left devastated after their beloved family pet was allegedly stolen in a brazen daylight theft.

Two-year-old male Fawn French Bulldog ‘Theo’ is believed to have been taken from the backyard of his family’s Carrara home some time between midday and 3.30pm last Wednesday, October 31.

Owner Kimberley Breece said she had returned to her Opal Court home to find Theo missing with the back gate wide open and the latch bent upwards.

While originally thinking the dog had simply run away, she later believed somebody had stolen him.

“As the hours progressed (since his disappearance) I knew he had to be with someone,” Ms Breece said.

“He had got out of the house previously but always comes right back. He is a home dog and a mumma’s boy.”

A neighbour witnessed a man chasing a French Bulldog matching Theo’s description down the street after hearing a number of dogs barking.

“Our neighbour told us there was a commotion on the road with a bunch of dogs barking and then he saw a man on the street chasing Theo,” Ms Breece said.

“He didn’t know it was our dog until he saw the flyers we put out the next day.”

The man was described as aged in his 30s, medium build and with a short or scruffy beard.

The alleged dognapping is the latest in a spate of crimes where brazen thieves have targeted expensive dog breeds such as French Bulldogs.

Last September a man told The Bulletin three men tried to take his six-month-old French Bulldog from him when he was out walking, while earlier this year a family dog narrowly escaped the clutches of a thief by jumping from the stranger’s car.

Ms Breece and her partner Shannon Miller have been left distraught since the disappearance.

“We’re sick and devastated and just going through a range of different emotions,” she said.

“We’re angry that people could go in and take what is a family member to us.

“He sleeps on my bed every night and is very attached to our family. He would be so scared right now.”

Theo is microchipped and has his DNA registered with Dogs Queensland.

The couple have been handing out flyers and using social media to help spread the word and find their much adored pet.

“It’s just terrifying. We are trying to get the image out so whoever has taken him can’t do anything like sell him or take him out in public,” Ms Breece said.

Police are currently investigating the incident and are calling on anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
