FISHOS will be reeling in a new rule change for the final month of the Million Dollar Fishing competition this year, with the March Madness campaign doubling the winnings for the first lucky angler.

The campaign, which won’t affect the $1m tagged fish, will see the first registered winner in March double their winnings. That means if the first caught fish is a tagged $10,000 barra, the winner will collect $20,000.

Million Dollar Fish ambassador and Sportsbet external affairs manager Brad Fanning said with the rate of winning casts slowing down, fishos would be keen to reel in the first March fish and their own piece of history and glory on the end of their rods.

“... SportsBet is absolutely thrilled to launch the March Madness campaign which will hopefully result in more winners taking home huge cash prizes next month,” he said.

“We had a record-breaking start to the competition, and we’re hoping this campaign will encourage more fishos to hit the water ...”

With the purple tagged $5000 charity barra worth $10,000, the competition’s charities including the Cancer Council, Star Ball and Shimano Junior Indigenous Guide Program could also benefit from the new campaign.

There are still 123 tagged barra to be caught through the competition, including seven worth $1m.

Major Events Minister Natasha Fyles said doubling the prize would encourage more people to wet a line and contribute to the economic benefits of the competition.

“It also encourages people to get out and explore the Territory’s waterways and coastlines, ultimately promoting the NT as one of Australia’s best fishing destinations,” she said.

“Season six got off to an exciting start, with 10 fish caught in the first three months.

“This announcement will encourage more Territorians and visitors to enter the competition, and hopefully reel in more barra and more cash,” she said.
