Spotting a rip: How to stay safe at the beach

The Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club has officially opened its new $5.5 million clubhouse.

A decade in the works, the modern development is set to increase community safety for the thousands of beachgoers who flock to the popular beach annually.

New features include a cafe/restaurant, kiosk, community meeting spaces, a function room, first-aid facilities and administrative offices.

Anglesea SLSC president Tom Cullen said the redevelopment will ensure the club can support its large membership for many years to come.

“Thanks to the many donors who contributed to this redevelopment which has given us new administration and training offices, enhanced first-aid and ambulance access, and much more,” Mr Cullen said.

“It’s also given us space to grow into the future to better serve the Anglesea community and travellers alike.”

Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville officially opened the new building on Saturday.

With more than 1500 members, Anglesea SLSC had outgrown its former clubhouse, built more than 60 years ago when the club had only 200 members.

Ms Lisa Neville said the opening was a “significant milestone” for the local club, which is one of Victoria’s largest.

“It will ensure its lifesavers have the tools and facilities they need to respond to incidents and keep people safe in the water for many years to come,” she said.

Anglesea’s beach is patrolled every summer by club volunteers and last season, lifesavers and lifeguards performed 1493 preventive actions, treated 31 minor and two major first aid cases, and undertook two rescues.

The $5.5 million building was funded by the Victorian Government ($1.5m), the Federal Government ($1.5m), Surf Coast Shire ($250,000) and Anglesea SLSC ($2.3m).
