Nathan Powell raises $30k through comedy for a cure at One Mile Brewery

The Darwin community have raised more than $30k for a young local girl with a super rare genetic condition. Find out how they did it.

DARWIN comedians are rallying behind a local family in need of a laugh.

Three-year-old Tallulah Moon Whitrod was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease in 2020, one that left her with an almost complete loss of function.

The condition is a hereditary genetic mutation so rare her diagnosis was the first in Australia, and had little to no research for treatment or a cure.

But the family was determined to fight for their daughter’s health, and set out on a mission to raise enough money to find a cure.

Enter the Darwin community.

Charity at One Mile

Through local fundraisers, including a number organised by comedian Nathan Powell, more than $1 million has been raised for medical research.

This includes more than $30,000 from a series of comedy trivia nights, surpassing Mr Powell’s intial goal of $20,000.

“They’re at the point where they’ve identified the gene and are working on trials,” Mr Powell said.

Parents Chris and Golden Whitrod set up a foundation called Genetic Cures for Kids, with all money collected going straight to a group of researchers working out of Queensland.

“These guys are amazing and give so much hope to other parents — I just wanted to get behind it, and the best way I can help is by making people laugh,” Mr Powell said.
