Mundingburra MP criticises policy details of opposition leader

“If he shuts up and makes no mistakes, he’s going to have an easy ride,” Mundingburra MP Les Walker said about another former Townsville City Councillor.

Mundingburra MP Les Walker has accused the opposition leader of “playing the small target” with LNP political candidates being limited to phrases explaining their policies.

Following the results of a YouGov poll which said Labor was likely to lose 21 seats in the election in six months, the local MP said David Crisafulli needed to be tested further on policies.

“If he shuts up and makes no mistakes, he’s going to have an easy ride,” Mr Walker said.

“Well, I’ll tell you what, we’re going to call it out every day, because the people of Townsville need to see what they have got.

“And it’s nothing.

“The empty folders they carry is just a stamp collection saying which towns they visited and who they spoke to.”

LNP’s Mundingburra candidate Janelle Poole was unable to be reached for comment, while KAP candidate Michael Pugh said both of the major parties based in Brisbane were wrong in their approaches.

He said the party had asked premier Steven Miles for a change of policy in question time which would allow scrutiny of all party leaders.

“KAP welcomes scrutiny of our policies and we look forward to scrutinising the LNPs so called solutions,” Mr Pugh said.

Mr Walker is a former Townsville City councillor, which is something he has in common with the opposition leader.

Mr Crisafulli said he was not interested in the polling figures which suggested he was favoured to become the next premier, with the opposition leading 56 to 44 per cent on a two-party preference.

He said voters cared more about the figures involving youth crime, health, housing, and the cost of living, which he said would determine the “battle lines” of the election.

“That’s our focus, the numbers that drive us are the numbers Queenslanders are talking about, rising power prices, rising youth crime, ambulance ramping spiralling out of control, not being able to get into the housing market,” Mr Crisafulli said.

Mr Walker’s criticism echoes the opinion of former LNP premier Campbell Newman who said on a Sky News podcast recently the LNP was “undeserving to win”.

“It’s just an extraordinarily arrogant display from people who think they have the state election in the bag,” Mr Newman said.

An LNP spokesman said that Mr Newman was the state executive of the Libertarian Party.

The spokesman said the opposition had specific policies such as the Making Queensland Safer Laws which vowed to punish breach of bail, and to ensure victims had more power in the justice system.

The opposition was also dedicated to affordable housing and to adjust the stamp duty tax, and also funding $20m towards social enterprises.

Police Minister Mark Ryan accused the opposition of “deliberately withholding things” while he announced draft legislation to severely punish criminals deliberately ramming emergency vehicles.

“So it requires more scrutiny, and voters will judge that scrutiny and make a decision at the election.”
