One of the Top End’s most loved Thai festivals is back for another year, with the organisers expecting this year’s festival to be the most exciting yet.
From traditional Thai street food offerings, performances and activities such as fruit carving, to chilli eating competitions, cooking workshops and more, there’ll be something for everyone down at this year’s Thailand Grand Festival at Civic Park.
As well as food and activities, local and interstate fighters will compete for the prestigious Thailand Grand Cup in Muay Thai, in partnership with Darwin’s Man Ho Academy of Martial Arts.
The Thailand Grand Parade will also return, bringing music, traditional dance and a ceremonial water blessing.
The free family-friendly festival – which will be held on April 26 from 11am-10pm – will celebrate ‘Songkran’, the Thai New Year.
This year’s theme, ‘Lanna Maha Songkran’, invites locals and visitors to experience the culture of Northern Thailand.
Event spokeswoman Tou Saramat Ruchkaew said she hoped the festival would draw a large crowd.
“Every year we attract a very big crowd because a lot of people love Thai food and we bring boxing to the festival as well,” she said.
“Please come and join us; we’re bringing Thailand to your doorstep.
“We’d love for you to experience our culture; everyone is welcome to be a part of the celebration.”
Minister for Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby said events such as the Thailand Grand Festival were a great way to celebrate the NT’s multiculturalism.
“The multicultural story of the Northern Territory is truly wonderful,” she said.
“People like our Thai community and all of our multicultural communities really make this a truly special place for us.
“Thousands of people attend the … festival each year, which has injected more than $1 million into our economy in previous years.”
The event is supported by the NT government through the NT Major Events Company.
