Meghan, who had earlier admitted she might not be able to hold back her tears at WellChild Awards in London, was later praised for her ability to connect with the children.
When spina bifida patient Matilda Booth handed the Duchess a posy of flowers, Meghan pulled out a white rose and gave it back to the seven-year-old for her “memory box”.
Matilda’s mother Sharon said both Meghan and Harry “made Matilda feel so special.
“They were just so lovely,” she said.
“It was very exciting. Matilda … was very nervous about meeting them but they completely put us at ease.”
Meghan, 37, also drew smiles from McKenzie Brackley, 4, when she told him his balloon dog was “very cool”. McKenzie had spent three months in intensive care with acute flaccid paralysis and has had to learn to speak, swallow, eat, drink and move again.
The WellChild Awards celebrate the bravery of Britain's most seriously ill children and their carers.
In his speech, Harry said: “I want to acknowledge the young people who have been dealt the toughest cards imaginable but who persevere, rise above, and set the example of living life to the fullest.”
