Matildas star joins Edge Hill Utd at training, Bulldogs bring bite

CAIRNS State High School has cemented its place as the leading football school in North Queensland with both boys and girls teams reaching the final 32 of a major knockout tournament.

The school boasts a successful women’s football program, which counts Matildas squad member and Melbourne City defender Winonah Heatley among its alumnus, and has regularly been the regional representative at the Queensland state finals.

They smashed Holy Spirit Mackay 6-0 to reach the state’s final four. The boys beat Kirwan 2-1 in a heart-stopper to ensure both Bulldogs team would put their bite on the competition in Brisbane.

The Bill Turner Cup has been around for 43 years, while the girls’ Trophy has run for three decades.

About 850 school teams from NSW, Queensland, ACT and Victoria participate each year, with all players 15 years and under.

EDGE Hill United will wear specially designed jerseys to mark NAIDOC Week when they host Southside Comets in a FQPL crunch match.

The strips will be presented by Glenn Raveleigh and Nicole Enoch-Chatfield prior to the First Nations game.

It is a vital clash for both teams, who are in the box seat to finish in the top four.

Leichhardt is four points clear of Southside and eight of the Tigers, with a win crucial if the Lions are to be caught.

Edge Hill Utd is in a slump, having lost three and drawn one of their past four games.

STILL on Edge Hill United, the all-conquering women’s team welcomed a Matildas star to their ranks for a training session.

Mary Fowler joined the defending champions at Tiger Park for a run last week, giving the young players in particular an experience they won’t forget.

It’s the latest in a string of appearances, having attended local games and sports days, while fulfilling dates dor Rebel, for whom she’s recently become an Ambassador, across the country.

Fowler, who has 24 caps for the Matildas, recently signed a four-year deal with Manchester City.

Her sisters Louise and Ciara form part of the team’s strong midfield combination.

Former Edge Hill utd young guns and Queensland Academy of Sport duo Tilly Heatley and Lila Falchetti also returned to their home team.

Edge Hill Utd is preparing for the Kappa Women’s Super Cup semi final on July 16.

MARLIN Coast did well to fight back for a draw in their tough trip to Innisfail, in a result which hurt their chances of winning the league.

The third-placed Rangers trailed 3-0 against the Cutters, who are fifth with two wins to their name so far.

Marlin Coast pulled a 3-3 draw from the fire, showing the fight which has taken them from back-to-back wooden spoons to a title contender in 2022.
