Massive Frankston Hospital expansion to kick off as public-private project

A Frankston Hospital expansion worth more than half a billion dollars is set to transform the region’s medical services and include an 11-story tower, an extra 120 beds and speciality services.

$562 million expansion of the Frankston Hospital

A massive expansion of Frankston Hospital will kick off as a public-private partnership in the coming weeks.

The Andrews Government will call for consortiums to back the half a billion dollar build on Tuesday, which includes an 11-story tower housing an extra 120 beds and speciality services.

Planned to open in late 2024, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said preliminary site works at Frankston Hospital including geotechnical investigations had been completed in July.

“While the coronavirus fight continues, we’re still continuing to deliver important hospital projects across the state. This redevelopment will transform Frankston Hospital and ensure local families have the best services they need,” Ms Mikakos said.

Under the public-private partnership plan, the $562 million expansion is set to include two new operating theatres and 13 new emergency department beds, new oncology services and dedicated space for specialised mental health services.

With about 3000 babies born at the existing Frankston Hospital each year and more young families moving to region, Ms Mikakos said the redevelopment will see women’s and children’s services expanded, including new obstetrics, maternity and paediatric wards.

Following months of feedback from the community about what services need to be increased, the hospital expansion will also incorporate a women’s clinic and a special care nursery.

First announced in 2018, the major expansion of Frankston Hospital is now included in $7 billion worth of planned health infrastructure projects announced by the Victorian Government.

From today an Expression of Interest period will seek to secure a partner for the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the Frankston project.

Frankston Labor MP Paul Edbrooke said the hospital project would create up to 1,700 jobs from construction and new job opportunities for healthcare workers.

“This major expansion will create hundreds of jobs for the people of Frankston – giving local families more employment opportunities and world-class healthcare, closer to home,” Mr Edbrooke said.
