Mark Latham has bared all about his side of the fall out with his former partner Nathalie Matthews.
After announcing that he would provide an “extensive statement” to the media on Saturday, Mr Latham stood up at Onslow Park near Camden to read a lengthy defence written on A4 pieces of paper.
Mr Latham called his relationship with Ms Matthews an “entirely consensual arrangement between two adults” before it fell apart on the night of the Rosehill Racecourse sale vote.
The embattled MP said that night was the “first time in my life I’d ever been physically scared of a woman” when the pair got into an argument after Ms Matthews allegedly confronted him while covered in mud.
Mr Latham claimed the Rosehill Racecourse sale day started well between the pair. They sent regular updates on the vote and celebrated the result, in between making remarks about his parliamentary colleagues’ looks which he likened to “compliments”.
But when they planned to book a hotel and meet up at the end of the night, the connection quickly soured.
After not hearing back from Ms Matthews, Mr Latham claimed he arrived at her apartment at about 10pm, when Ms Matthews came out and “screamed” at him.
“She had mud all down the front, mud down the legs and I’ve been around the block a few times, but this was the first time in my life I’d ever been physically scared of a woman,” he said.
“This was like something from World War Z you know, there was this was zombified, messed up look on her face, mud all down her … and her response to me asking (questions) … was to whack me in the head (and) tell me I was an intruder to her apartment.
“I tell you this was something I’ve never seen before, and I hope I never see again and that’s why I subsequently described it as monstrous.”
Mr Latham alleged Ms Matthews texted him an hour later telling him to “book a sl*t” at which point he blocked her.
“I (felt) like (I’d) lost self respect, and I swear she will never do that again, because she’ll never, ever have the chance to do that again.”
When asked about his financial matters, Mr Latham denied he ever bought or sold WiseTech shares despite discussing financial information about the company with Ms Matthews — which he claimed he learned of through her private conversations with its CEO Richard White.
“I’ve never bought a share in my life,” he declared. “Next question.”
Mr Latham also refused to deny he had sex with Ms Matthews in his parliamentary office when pressed on the incident, saying people could “write whatever (they) like”.
“Members of parliament are allowed to run their own office,” he said.
“These are not matters of public interest … but the truth is, members of parliament have privilege for whatever happens in their office, it is their own domain.”
Questions diverted to Mr Latham’s legal dramas and when asked if the subpoenas he had pursued were meant to intimate his former partner, the MP labelled the claim “another Matthews falsehood”.
The MP said the subpoenas were designed to test Ms Matthews’ allegations in court that Mr Latham made her have sex with other men, of which he said “there were many” — but only of her own volition.
“She’s falsely claimed in her private application to the court that I made her have sex with other people, so this allows us to interrogate the people that, unprompted by me … she’s had sex with, and there are many,” Mr Latham said.
“So the (subpoenas are) directed in part … to get information that’s relevant to her application so it can be tested in the court, which, of course, is the process of justice.”
The other allegations, including that Mr Latham defecated on his former girlfriend during sex, were dismissed as “nonsense, complete nonsense”.
“(She is) making things up … as I said earlier in the week, most of the things she’s complaining about, or 95 per cent of the things she’s complaining about, she initiated,” he claimed.
As he walked out of his own press conference and drove off, Mr Latham rolled down his window and said “the master is departing”, referring to the name he allegedly asked Ms Matthews to call him during their relationship.
Ms Matthews issued a statement that said she was aware of the comments made by Mr Latham on Saturday: “As the matter is before the court, I will not make any further comments at this time. I request the privacy that I deserve whilst I go through this stressful period. The full story will come out in due course in the proper manner”.
