Mandatory Covid isolation period move after states, territories and Federal Government meet

The Northern Territory’s mandatory Covid isolation period is in for a huge shake-up. Here’s everything you need to know about the new rules.

Mandatory isolation periods for people who test positive to Covid-19 will stay in place for a while longer across the Northern Territory.

People in the NT with the illness will remain locked away from others for the next two weeks.

The mandatory isolation period ends on Friday, October 14.

The removal of mandatory isolation was confirmed on September 30, following advice from the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer to National Cabinet.

High-risk settings including aged care, healthcare and correctional facilities will still have policies in place for visitors and staff who test positive.

NT Chief Health Officer Dr Charles Pain is reviewing Covid policies and public health measures and any changes required will be confirmed closer to October 14.

It will remain a notifiable illness with a requirement to record positive tests.

This change will allow Territorians to manage their own symptoms in line with the severity of illness, Dr Pain said.

He said it was important for those who felt unwell to stay home to help protect the community, regardless of Covid or other ailments.

“The change to the isolation period announced today represents an important milestone in our progress towards managing Covid-19 like other infectious illnesses,” Dr Pain said.

“As with any infectious illness, it remains important that all Territorians stay home if feeling sick or experiencing Covid symptoms, so that they don’t pass on their illness to others.

“It is also important we continue to protect the most vulnerable members of the community, and simple measures including staying home and wearing masks will continue to limit transmission.

“It is also important to seek further care for Covid-19 from your doctor if you are vulnerable and eligible for treatment.”
