Police will prepare a report for the coroner after young woman’s burnt body found in parkland

Police will prepare a report for the coroner after the “sudden” and “unexpected death” of a woman, whose charred body was found on a BMX track, south of Brisbane early on Friday morning.

Police say the death of a 43-year-old woman whose charred body was discovered in a popular park is not suspicious.

Just after 5.30am on Friday, firefighters were called to extinguish a blaze at a BMX track in Browns Plains in Logan, south of Brisbane, before finding the woman’s charred body.

The identity of the woman is known, and police have confirmed she likely lived locally to the area, but her name has not been released.

Detective Inspector Chris Knight earlier on Friday said investigators were “considering a number” of circumstances surrounding the incident.

“(Fire crews) found a grass fire which they … extinguished, and during that process they located the deceased remains of a young lady who had been affected by fire,” he told reporters.

“We most certainly are not saying that it’s homicide, it is simply an unexplained death at this moment in time.

“There are circumstances surrounding this lady’s movements and the circumstances of the fire (that are not known).”

Detective Inspector Knight said there was no evidence of anybody staying in the park over the days leading up the incident. It is believed the woman was travelling on foot in the area in the hours before her death.

But late on Friday, police released a statement saying they had “discontinued a crime scene at the location.”

“Police are now treating the woman’s death as non-suspicious, and a report will now be prepared for the Coroner.”

No details on the cause of the fire has been released, although accelerant testing had been conducted at the site.

The track was closed to the public for most of Friday as police investigated.

Police urged anyone with dashcam footage or further information to contact Crime Stoppers.
