Locals take to social media to offer support to bushfire victims

Despite the unprecedented bushfire crisis, heartwarming acts of kindness lifted the spirits of those affected by the firestorms with people taking to social media to offer their homes, food, and cold beers to those affected by the bushfires.

Four NSW fires burning at emergency level

Despite the unprecedented bushfire crisis devastating communities across NSW, heartwarming acts of kindness lifted the spirits of those affected by the firestorms.

As the fires continued to burn around northern NSW resulting in lives and homes lost, locals banded together to help where they could. 

Whether it was food, water or a place to stay, charitable Old Bar residents took to social media to offer their support.

Local Koran Taylor opened his home to those affected, writing: “With Coles and bakery closed if anyone needs food, drinks, tea, coffee, shower, clothes or anything you can go to our home on Old Bar.

“We don’t have much but what we have we will gladly share with anyone who can’t go home or needs support right now.”

Local takeaway restaurant Sai Thai Table and Tea offered a free meal for up to 100 people, posting on Facebook: “Dear Old Bar people. Tonight we will open for everyone who does not have anything to ear. Please come join us for our shout on (sic) dinner tonight until our stock runs out. We hopefully can serve for up to 100 people this evening. Stay safe.

Alistair Flower put a call out to all NSW fire volunteers, letting them know he could provide them with a bed, a cold beer and food.

“I have 20 physical beds available at Hastings Hotel and Settlers Inn each (so can sleep/ shower up to 40,)” he wrote. “If anyone can get in contact directly with the RFS volunteers coming in or a co-ordinator – please give them my number. I have hot meals and cold beers available also at both venues for all volunteers.

Forster resident Jono Devambez revealed he and his brother left work early yesterday afternoon to help firefighters control the blazes.

“Yesterday my brother Rudy and I decided to put our tools down when we saw Forster was in trouble and load our gear up and go help the local firefighters and do our little bit to put the fires out with the equipment we have,” he wrote on Facebook.

“We have decided to do out RFS training to be more efficient and hopefully do a little more next time.”

Natalie Chester opened her home to the frail and elderly, or anyone who was scared by the hazardous conditions.

”If there is anyone particularly (sic) frail, elderly or living alone who would like a bit of time out from one of the Old Bar evacuation points or is lonely/scared at home alone my door is open and you are welcome to come relax here for a while,” she wrote on Facebook"Happy to come pick you up if required.”

Taree resident Emma Warburton took to Facebook to tell locals their donations and support had been effective.

“Just been to see if the firefighters need anything and they have been inundated with food and drink,” she wrote. “The community has really pulled together. All food and drink is being redirected to evacuation centres.”
