Cougars goal attack Zanna Woods says the long trip to the grand final has given the team a better appreciation for the chance at a premiership.

Geelong finished on top of the VNL ladder but lost its first final against City West Falcons, meaning the side had to beat Melbourne University Lightning to get a rematch with the Falcons in the grand final.

Woods said it had been a competitive season but the Falcons were a difficult challenger.

“The top seven teams or so have been really competitive, they all have a good group of players and good coaches,” she said.

“The Falcons are really good, they have a great range of athletes and play a really disciplined, smart style of netball.

“They’ve got Jane (Cook) in goals and she’s a really good target, but they’ve also got Uneeq Palavi who they can use really well too.”

The Cougars led by as many as 12 goals against the Falcons in the first final, but a late flurry of goals from City West earned a 70-65 victory.

Woods said it was an “uncharacteristic” loss from Geelong, with the side making unforced errors late in the game.

“We made a lot of uncharacteristic errors, especially late in the game,” she said.

“The Falcons were able to capitalise on those mistakes and they scored off our errors a bit too quickly.

“We’ve had a look at what we did wrong, and we’ve worked on fixing those mistakes so now we feel like they won’t have a sniff at getting some of those chances.

“That’s the good thing about losing that first final, it’s given us the chance to fix some of those mistakes and work on it during another game, and now we have no complacency going into the game.

“It’s a pretty incredible group at the Cougars, the level of respect we have for each other is so high and we really don’t take anything for granted in this competition.

“We have this love and respect for each other so much, we respect our games and our teammates strengths and weaknesses, because it’s a tough competition and you need to be united.”
