A wounded Donald Trump was heard saying, “let me get my shoes” as US Secret Service agents rushed him from the stage during an attempted assassination.
Seconds earlier, the former US president had grabbed his ear and ducked behind the podium as a series of shots rang out at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
As the former president went down, the screaming began.
“Get down, get down,” came the call, as Secret Service agents swarmed the stage and piled atop Trump, acting as human shields.
As another gunshot rings out, a voice can be heard frantically asking, “What are we doing?”
Heavily armed officers in tactical gear ascend the stage as Trump remains pinned to the ground.
“When you’re ready,” another says after a few moments. “On you.”
“Move!” another shouts. “Shooter’s down. Move.”
The agents hoist Trump to his feet, his trademark red “Make America Great Again” cap knocked off his head, his ear bloodied and blood smeared on his face.
As the agents lift Trump, the former president says: “Let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes!”
“We’ve got you sir,” an agent says.
“Hold onto your head, it’s bloody,” another says.
“Wait, wait,” Trump says.
Struggling against their grip, he raises his clenched fist in the air in a symbol of defiance that is likely to become the defining image of the election campaign.
As blood trickles down the right side of his face, Trump shouts “fight, fight, fight!”
As the Secret Service agents surrounded Trump and move him to a nearby black SUV, Trump continuously raises his fist as they push him into the vehicle, to chants of “USA!” from the crowd.
Fans of Trump applauded his attitude during the situation.
“Can’t have more brave and bad*** person like him,” one fan said.
“He needs his shoes lol gotta love the f**k outa this guy!!” another fan said.
“Have we ever seen anything more f***ing rockstar than Trump getting shot in the head and then still fist pumping with a bloody ear to get the crowd going,” one person tweeted.
The extraordinary images of a defiant Trump pumping his fist in the air were quickly posted on social media by his son Eric Trump with the caption: “This is the fighter America needs.”
