A 31-year-old Cairnlea man has handed himself into police after the body of a woman was found on Ballarat Rd in Ardeer last night.

Road toll soars in Victoria

A woman was left to die on the side of the road following an alleged hit-run collision in Ardeer this morning.

Victoria Police today confirmed there was “some time” between the woman being hit by a car and the discovery of her body at 7.40pm last night.

It comes after a horror night on Victorian roads, where another three people died in two other crashes.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Stephen Leane said the driver had sped off after hitting the woman with his black Holden Commodore VT.

“The person involved knew that they’d hit another person, and they left that person on the side of the road,” Commissioner Leane said.

“The driver of that vehicle, another young person, has surrendered himself to police and is now being interviewed by police.”

Commissioner Leane confirmed some of the woman’s family had been notified, but they were waiting until all members of the family had been informed before formally identifying the victim.

The woman is believed to be in her 20s or 30s and was found near the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Chatsworth Avenue about 7.40pm.

Police believe she was allegedly hit by a black Holden Commodore VT on Ballarat Rd.

A crime scene was established as detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit worked to determine what happened.
