Man wanted in connection to Narre Warren carjacking

FOOTAGE of a man linked to a car stolen in a horror carjacking where a mum was pistol whipped in Narre Warren South has been released by police.

The woman was driving a Volkswagen Golf along Harrington Drive at Narre Warren South on July 26 about 9pm when three youths in an SUV bumped into her car.

When she got out of the car she was threatened with the gun, then pistol whipped to the mouth when she refused to hand over her keys.

The stolen VW was then involved in a collision in Dandenong two days after it was stolen when police attempted to intercept it.

The distinctive white car was found abandoned in a driveway, with a man seen fleeing the scene.

Footage and images show a man aged in his mid-20s, of Asian appearance, but detectives are yet to establish whether he was involved in the carjacking.

“It’s very likely he received the car shortly after the incident and had been driving around prior to dumping it in Dandenong,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Hatt told 3AW today.

“When he ran away from the car on Saturday morning there’s a few cameras in the area that have captured him running away. He’s very cagey, as the footage clearly shows, and we’re hoping that anyone who knows his identity can call Crimestoppers.”

He is described as Asian appearance and in his 20s.

The victim of the car jacking who asked to be identified only as Kay, said the offender placed the gun on her forehead and she thought she was going to die.

“I couldn’t sleep last night,” she said.

“I think what they did was absolutely heartless.

“Towards the end I thought I was going to die. I thought they were going to shoot me.”

About 9am on Saturday, officers tried to intercept a VW bearing false numberplates on Stud Road, but it sped away along a service lane.

Police were then told of a collision involving the VW and another car at the intersection of Stud and Brady roads.

No one was injured during the crash.

“The VW was located abandoned in a driveway, with a male driver fleeing the scene,” Victoria Police spokesman Luke Zammit said.

“No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.

“Police have since established the car was involved in a carjacking in Narre Warren on July 26.”

On Thursday, Southern Metro Region Crime Team Detective Acting Sergeant Dean Higgins said two of the young males involved in the carjacking were of African appearance but police did not have a description of the third offender as that person stayed in the SUV.

“It is horrendous,” Acting Sgt Higgins said.

“To have a firearm pointed at you and to be threatened in the dark of night is horrific.”

Acting Sgt Higgins said the victim was nudged from behind by the SUV the carjackers were in before they struck.

“She stopped to exchange details and in the process two young men of African appearance got out the vehicle and with an implement we believe to be a handgun demanded the victim’s keys,” Acting Sgt Higgins said.

“She refused initially and the male with the handgun has hit her with the butt of the firearm in the mouth and demanded the keys again.

“She complies and the two males got in the car and drove off.”

Kay’s son, Jag, said his mum struggled to give up the keys to the car because she was in shock.

“They’ve come out the car with a pistol and basically assaulted her and took the keys from my mum,” Jag told 3AW.

“They’ve hit her with what we believe is a pistol or a gun in the face and then pushed her around trying to get the keys off her,” Jag said.

The group then took off in the distinctive car.

“She’s obviously shaken up, we’re taking her back to the doctors this morning … there’s a bit of paranoia there … there’s a lot of bruising and swelling,” her son said.

The two offenders who attacked his mum were of African descent, one was at least 182cm, another was about 170cm tall and were in their late teens to early twenties, Jag said.

One of the men remained in a “light coloured 4WD” used to hit the Golf and fled in it, Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O’Grady said.

Both the stolen car and the 4WD headed west on Harrington Drive, she confirmed.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
