Mr Eustace fled but later handed himself into police.
After hours of questioning by homicide squad detectives, he was charged with one count of murder. He was taken to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court late on Saturday but was not made to appear in the dock as his case was quickly adjourned.
He is expected to return to court on Wednesday for a brief hearing where dates will be set for when his case will proceed.
Neighbours told the Sunday Herald Sun of their shock at the woman’s death.
Nearby resident Elle, who asked her surname be withheld, said the woman always hosted parties but something seemed wrong when she heard screaming.
“She’s a social person, she was very loud. She lived there on her own but people always come around on the weekend,” she said.
“I heard a high pitched screech, she was screaming in pain.
“There was music on and there were guys there when there was screaming. There were men yelling at her as well.”
Another resident Thalma Mullane believed the home was a boarding house.
“People come and go there all the time, it’s very rare the same people are seen,” she said.
“Yesterday there was a lot of noise and voices there, the backyard is always full of people outside smoking.
“It’s really sad, I’ve never seen any trouble. It’s a bit disturbing.”
Mariano Cornakl, who also lives on the street, said: “They kept to themselves, it’s a quiet area. This is the first time we’ve seen this happening in our street, I feel surprised.”
Neighbour Darren said the people that lived in the house were “very different people.”
“They’re reserved, the keep to themselves,” he said.
“I know all my neighbours, except for them. It’s a shock to me, they never wave.
“One young woman lives there, but lately I’ve started seeing a few more boys there.”
