A guard at Barwon Prison has been injured in an attack by an inmate in the latest instance of violence inside Victoria’s correctional system.

A violent criminal has attacked and injured an officer this morning at Barwon Prison.
Police were called in to investigate after the assault at the maximum security prison, near Geelong.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesman said the inmate was quickly detained and that the officer was treated on site for minor injuries.
The Sunday Herald Sun understands the prisoner has a history of violence within the jail system.
He is behind bars over a vicious, unprovoked stabbing in Melbourne.

The spokesman said: “The Department of Justice and Community Safety takes the safety of its staff extremely seriously. All incidents or allegations of violence or assault in prison are referred to Victoria Police.”
People who attack emergency workers, including jail staff, are now eligible for mandatory prison sentences.
