POLICE are ramping up drug and alcohol testing for drivers in Victoria’s state parks and forests in a bid to clamp down on rogue riders.

Cops will hit the state’s dirt tracks and trails to catch out dangerous riders and drivers to prevent serious collisions and injury.

More than 900 offenders have been picked up doing the wrong thing in the past nine months, with one in every 40 riders found to be drug-affected.

Police also served more than 1200 unlicensed, suspended and disqualified riding infringements.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer warned motorists the road rules did not end at the bitumen.

“What we often see in our crashes is dangerous and unsafe riding practices, with riders unregistered or unlicensed,” he said.

“With experience, good preparation and an understanding of what is expected when riding comes compliance, and with compliance, you’re safer.”

He also urged riders to ensure sure they wear appropriate protective gear at all times.

“If you come off and don’t have the right gear on, you’re going to be in a world of pain.”
