HUNDREDS of new police officers will be deployed across Victoria in a bid to keep crime under control.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton announced this morning that 825 police officers would be assigned to “areas of the highest need” over 12 months beginning in May.

More than 200 specialist family violence police will be deployed across the state, the first of almost 3000 new officers promised by the Andrews Government.

Three hundred officers will be distributed across growth areas Geelong, Wyndham, Melton, Hume and Cardinia.

A further 93 officers are to be deployed in specialist areas such as road policing, counter-terrorism, intelligence, professional standards, transit and public safety.

Mr Ashton said the surge in officers would allow the police force to be “agile and responsive to the needs of the community”.

“At Victoria Police our absolute focus is on keeping people safe (and) to do that we need to be the best policing service we can be ... on the front foot, preventing crime and locking up offenders,” he said.

“That is what we are creating in Victoria — using the significant investments made by the State Government to put more police on the streets with the right training and right equipment, able to respond and prevent crime where and when needed.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said the government had “fundamentally changed” the way police resources were allocated.

“This is the new normal — this police academy is full and it is going to stay full each month, each year,” he said.

“It used to be the case that it was a boom and bust cycle and the chief commissioner would get whatever politicians had promised just prior to Victorians going to the ballot box.”

Mr Andrews stressed the importance of family violence specialists.

“Given the nature of family violence and the prevalence of family violence, if we can have a specialist response that frees up general duties officers to be off responding to other issues (this) is exactly the right way to go,” he said.

Mr Ashton said 103 officers would fill parental leave positions while 121 officers would be spread among the police assistance line, online reporting and the Air Wing.

Today’s announcement represents the first deployment of the 2729 new officers announced by the Andrews Government in December 2016.

All 2729 are expected to be deployed by July 2022.
