CCTV footage has provided clues to a suspicious fire above popular Italian cafe, Gelobar.

CCTV footage has provided clues to a suspicious fire above popular Italian cafe, Gelobar.

It is understood the footage captures a man, aged in his 60s, entering the Lygon St, Brunswick East, premises before the fire ignited about 2.40am Saturday.

Investigators working on the case were expected to pick up the footage yesterday, which depicts someone believed to have gained access to the building.

Police have been made aware of a man who had worked as a labourer on renovations to the upstairs section leased by the owners of Gelobar.

The fire started at the rear of the vacant first floor and sources say the alarm was raised by police driving by the shop.

Fire crews, who were on scene within 12 minutes, doused the flames and stopped it spreading to adjoining buildings and the downstairs restaurant.

The upstairs area was being renovated by the owners of the Gelobar.

Damage to the building is believed to have exceeded $300,000.

The existing ground floor cafe has continued to trade despite extensive damage upstairs, including to the roof.
