A senior police officer is under internal investigation over an alleged altercation with officers in Melbourne’s east.

Detective Inspector Darren Cooper was off-duty at the time of the incident, which began when divisional van officers were called to Burwood Highway, Wantirna early on Sunday morning.

A fracas allegedly broke out and Insp Cooper, from the Eastern Region, was driven away in a police van.

No charges have been laid against Insp Cooper.

Offenders who attack or injure emergency service workers, including police, while on duty face mandatory minimum sentences under laws introduced last September.

A police source told the Herald Sun police are not exempt from the law.

“If the emergency worker sustains injury then the mandatory minimum should apply,” said the source.

The alleged incident is now the subject of an internal probe by Professional Standards Command.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Alex Day said: “It would be inappropriate to comment” on the alleged incident while it’s being investigated.
