Victoria Police say a gunman who shot two men in Melbourne’s west early on Sunday morning knew the victims.

A 36-year-old and the 40-year-old were approached by another man at the corner of Devonshire Rd and Hampshire Rd in Sunshine about 2.30am.

Acting Senior Sergeant Topham said there was a “dispute” between the three men and a shooting then took place on Devon Pl off Devonshire Rd at 2.40 am. The shooter then allegedly fled in a car.

Both victims are being treated with non-life threatening injuries at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The 36-year-old man remains in a serious condition and the 40-year-old is in a stable condition.

Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Topham from the Serious Crime Response team said police did not believe the attack was random but don’t yet have a motive for the shooting.

Although the shooting occurred early in the morning, Acting Senior Sergeant Topham it was concerning that anyone would be prepared to use a firearm to settle a dispute.

“It’s dangerous for anyone,”

“A car could have been passing by and there are potentially apartments above the shops.” he said.

Police said they had spoken with the two victims, who are assisting with the investigation.

Jenny Scanlan, 70, has been a local of Sunshine West for 30 years and said she love the area, which she said usually felt pretty safe.

“It makes me sad but this kind of thing can happen anywhere.”

A Sunshine West local who did not want to be named said the area is “bagged” all the time but that this type of crime is happening everywhere.

“Between drugs and alcohol fuelled arguments, nobody thinks sensibly anymore,” she said.

The local said she believes there are too many “illegal guns hanging around” fuelling more violence.

The woman also said there were young families moving into the area and the morning’s shooting is a concern for them.

Pharmacy owner Dominic Uccillini said he arrived for work this morning and found a crime scene.

“We’re open seven days a week and we don’t usually have any trouble at all.”

Mr Uccillini said it wasn’t nice to arrive to work and “find this on your doorstep”.

Police removed crime scene tape from the area about 12.00 pm.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident or with any dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
