TWO men have been dramatically arrested near the Melbourne Assessment Prison in Spencer St over theft of a ute.

Public Order Response police swarmed the area this morning, taking the men — a 26-year-old and 21-year-old both from Southbank — into custody.

A silver Holden ute, believed to be stolen, was loaded on to a truck a short time ago.

The drama unfolded outside a Spencer St tyre store.

The younger arrested man was charged with theft of a motor vehicle. He was bailed to front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on February 13 next year.

The older man was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and commiting an indictable offence while on bail. He was due to face a bail hearing later today.
