An international student last night faced court charged over the stabbing death of a man at a Melbourne boarding house.

Sandeep Singh Walia, 26, is facing one count of murder after his alleged victim’s body was found at a Maidstone home about 6.50pm on Friday.

After a day of questioning by homicide detectives, Mr Walia was charged and appeared briefly at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard he was on a student visa and would require a Punjabi interpreter for future court appearances.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded to appear for a filing hearing on Wednesday.

A second man, 21, was also arrested at the home, but later released pending further inquiries.

They were both understood to have known the victim, who is yet to be identified.

Neighbours told the Sunday Herald Sun many men aged in their 20s lived at the property.

Nguyen Hong said about 10 men stayed at the home and worked as taxi and courier drivers. Mr Hong said he did not hear anything on Friday night.

Another resident who only wished to be known as Bob said he was surprised to see a crime scene established on his quiet residential street.

He initially thought someone may have had a heart attack when he first saw the flashing lights and ambulances arrive at the home.

“I saw forensic police and police tape and I realised that something else had happened,” he said.

“It’s frightening that this happened so close to home, and on a street that is home to a lot of older people.”

The single-storey brick house was cordoned off on Saturday with police tape while forensic crews worked inside to collect evidence.

The crime scene was eventially cleared about 10.20am.
