CARL Williams was taunted by inmates howling like dogs the night before he was murdered.

The drug kingpin, who was co-operating with police, complained about his treatment in a phone call to his lawyer just minutes before his skull was crushed by an inmate.

The howling, which echoed throughout Barwon Prison on the night of April 18, 2010, was aimed at Williams after it became widely known he was co-operating with police, detailing gangland killings of which he had intimate knowledge.

A prison insider told the Herald Sun he received a call from an inmate in the Acacia unit the night before Williams was killed.

"The boys were howling 'Dog, dog, dog'," the source said. "I got the call that night, the night before his death, saying 'Oh, there's trouble in here tonight'.

"The next day I found out he was dead."

The howling, a sign Williams's life was in danger, was ignored by authorities who chose not to move him.

Feared prisoner Matthew Johnson struck and killed Williams with a metal bar the next day.

Dog calls indicate that a prisoner is co-operating with police.

The incident was not part of the Victorian Ombudsman's report though it did reveal Williams's involvement with police was known throughout the prison.

Williams' lawyer, Rob Stary, confirmed Williams was worried about the dog calls during their final conversation on the morning he was killed.

"I can confirm he did complain of the dog calls and the howling," he said.

"There's no doubt he knew the significance of that. He knew what it meant and he was concerned about it."
Lawyers working on a $1 million writ on behalf of Williams's family are aware of reports of howling.

Corrections Victoria did not answer questions sent by the Herald Sun, but did not deny the dog calls.
