Tinny terrorist Shayden Jamil Thorne sentenced to three years, 10 months jail

Clumsy tinny terror plotter Shayden Jamil Thorne says his extremist views should no longer be feared as he was sentenced to a minimum of two years and 10-and-a-half months at the Victorian Supreme Court.

A clumsy tinny terror plotter says his extremist views should no longer be feared.

Shayden Jamil Thorne, 31, was one of six men who had the childish idea of sailing a 7m fishing boat from Far North Queensland to the Philippines to help overthrow the government in favour of the establishment of Islamic law.

Supreme Court Justice Michael Croucher said their plan was so amateurish, the wannabe terrorists would have barely made it out of Queensland in the little vessel they purchased.

Thorne last week pleaded guilty to a foreign incursion offence that carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment after initially indicating he would fight the charges.

He was jailed on Tuesday for three years and 10 months, with a minimum of two years and 10-and-a-half months.

Justice Croucher said Thorne was yet to formally renounce the extremist beliefs that motivated his offending, but had shown signs he was looking to change his ways.

“He has instructed his counsel to tell the court that he does not believe that he or any other Muslim is under a religious obligation to engage in violence in Australia … he does not intend to be violent and that he will not encourage other Muslims to be violent,” he said.

Co-offenders Murat Kaya, 28, was jailed for three years and eight months while his younger brother Kadir, 24, Paul Dacre, 33, and Antonio Granata, 28, were each sentenced to four years with a three-year non-parole period for the offence of engaging in conduct in preparation for incursions into foreign countries for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities.

Over a six-month period, between 2015 and 2016, the men planned their amateurish trip to the Philippines, stockpiling weapons and clothing, and expected their partners and children to join them there.

During Thorne’s plea hearing, the court was told a fellow inmate hit him on his back after he was recovering from spinal surgery while saying: “You got what you deserved, you dog.”

A plea hearing for ringleader Robert Cerantonio is set for March 15.
