ONE of the alleged tinnie terrorists has been denied bail despite his pleas that his wife was under significant hardship while he was locked up.

Murat Kaya was one of six men arrested on foreign incursion offences with police alleging the men planned to join Islamic State terrorists either in the Philippines or the Middle East.

His legal team asked that the 25-year-old tiler be released as he was the sole breadwinner in his household and his wife and child were suffering financial hardship.

Kaya was charged weeks after his co-accused were arrested in far North Queensland towing a boat that police allege they would have used to sail to South East Asia.

While Kaya was not arrested in Queensland the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard he was allegedly instrumental in buying the boat the men were towing.

Magistrate Belinda Wallington said she was not convinced the “high test” for bail in terrorism matters had been reached.

She said it was troubling that Kaya’s parents, grandparents and 11-year-old sister were stopped at the airport on May 9 — a day before his co-accused were arrested in Cairns.

Kaya’s brother Kadir, Shayden Thorne, Robert ‘Musa’ Cerantonio, Antonio Granata and Paul Dacre were arrested in Cairns and charged with foreign incursion offences.

The men will face a committal mention at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in February.
