A THIEVING mum has admitted teaming up with her 15-year-old son to stage a string of late-night robberies across Melbourne.
The woman, who cannot be named, took her teen son to major supermarkets where they stole hundreds of dollars worth of baby formula and other groceries.
The 36-year-old admitted hits on three supermarkets in the days before becoming involved in a wild police chase across Melbourne’s western suburbs earlier this month.
Both she and her son were on bail at the time and on their way to court when police spotted the pair in a stolen vehicle.
It sparked an intense 30-minute police pursuit in which the 15-year-old led frustrated officers on a crazed chase.
When police boxed in the car, the boy allegedly rammed and sideswiped the police vehicles to escape.
Not even deployed spikes could stop him, as he continued driving at speed with two bare rims on the road.
Why the teen was driving remains unclear, but the mother was unlicensed at the time.
The woman said the chase came to an end only after she was able to take the wheel from her son and swap seats with him, while the car remained in motion.
“Soon as I got the wheel I was trying to pull the car over,” she said later.
The woman appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this week where she pleaded guilty to a string of offences.
Prosecutors dropped four charges before she admitted charges including theft, unlicensed driving and offending while on bail.
The court heard the car and numberplates were stolen in the days before the pursuit and used in the string of thefts. Magistrate Tara Hartnett adjourned the matter until next month, remanding the woman in custody.
“You’re not going anywhere quickly,” she told her. “It’s amazing no one was killed”.
“You have had a spectacular dive into jail for the first time. The overall circumstances of this are incredibly serious.”
