A LIBERAL MP has turned his home into “Fort Knox” after thieves sneaked in and snatched keys to a family car.

Backbencher Jason Wood, a former AFP officer, said the thieves struck sometime between 4am and 7am recently.

The 48-year-old La Trobe MP said he was shocked to become a victim himself and said he understood the fear many in his electorate felt at the recent crime wave.

“We parked the car in the driveway at home and were up with our toddler most of the night because she was sick,” he said.

“At 7am we realised the car had gone.”

Mr Wood said it was lucky he did not come face to face with the burglars last month.

“If I had, it would have been on for young and old,” he said.

The MP has now installed cameras, alarms and new locks at his home following the theft of the Audi.

“My wife was home and we have a young child, so it is very concerning,” he said.

In another incident, thieves backed their car up to the entrance of a family home in Eltham before they smashed down the door and ransacked the property in daylight.

The owner of the house in Eltham, who asked for his name not to be published, said his family were left terrified following the burglary.

The owner had only left his house 20 minutes before when he was alerted by his home alarm company that there had been a break-in at his house on October 21.

He called triple 0 but was told police were unable to get there immediately because they didn’t have enough cars on the road.

In a third terrifying break-in, offenders reversed a white ute into the driveway of a home in Melbourne’s northwest before kicking down the front door.

“We thought our front door was safe,” the frightened victim said.

“They took two computers, gold jewellery, a significant amount of cash, a jewellery box and my purse.”

Three nights later the thieves returned and stole her grey Toyota.

“I woke up and the car was gone, I didn’t hear anything though, because they snuck in — and used the key,” she said.
