TERROR plot chief Abdul Nacer Benbrika has applied for parole and could walk free from prison in just five months.
The Herald Sun can reveal Benbrika applied for parole on Thursday. He is in the Hoya protection unit at Barwon jail.
Yesterday we reported there were fears Benbrika was radicalising other prisoners after his move to Hoya from more restrictive units.
Benbrika is serving 15 years for leading a terrorist plot to attack Melbourne landmarks.
The hate preacher is eligible to be considered for parole from November, but will not win it if authorities believe he is still a risk to the community.
The parole decision will be taken by the Attorney-General George Brandis.
A spokesman for Mr Brandis said: “The government is not able to comment on potential parole decisions.
“However, it is the government’s view that decisions about the parole of terrorism offenders should always be approached with a presumption against release.
“The safety of Australians is the first priority. That is why the government also passed legislation to enable convicted terrorist offenders to be kept behind bars at the end of their custodial sentences should they continue to pose an unacceptable risk.”
